Synopsis & Treatment

Synopsis

Our music video is going to follow the codes and conventions of a generic horror movie. The introduction to our music video will consist of many shots of the killer getting ready to leave and go to murder the victims one by one. Our music video will consist of a chase sequence between 3 people and a killer; the different people will be chased and killed in the 3 different verses of the song. In the chorus’ the shots will consist of a TV with the killers mouth lip syncing to the song, also in these chorus’ there will be chase scenes and shots of the killer walking around the areas. Throughout the music video the killers’ identity will not be revealed to show a sense of mystery.

Treatment

For the introduction of our music video there will be many shots of the killer getting ready to leave and go out to murder the victims one by one, we are going to do this as a tribute to the opening credits of the TV series Dexter. It will be quite dark with light only focusing on the main parts of the killer; his face, his hands etc. In one shot there will be a knife, with the killers face reflected off it to give a sense of mystery and since there will not be any weapons shown during our video, let the viewer know there is a weapon involved. This intro sequence will give the viewer an idea of how the rest of the video is going to pan out.

For the first verse we are going to use some abandoned areas around the college and the area near the college parking lot as the scenes for the first chase. This will involve Victim 1 running away from the killer through these areas, we are shooting day for night to give the music video a darker feel to it. The killer follows victim 1 to a locked door which the victim tries to open to escape. The shot cuts to a close up of the killers face which is how every murder shot will end because we are not going to carry a knife around public places.
The second verse will completely shot in first person as if the viewer themselves are running from the killer to add a sense of fear. Victim 2 will be running through a park to try to escape the killer, this is a public place, and added with the first person view we want to give the viewer a feel that they are not going to be safe wherever they go. Like verse 1 this will be shot day for night. The end of this scene will result in the victim falling over in the park and turning and looking up to see the killers face over them. There will then be a close up of the killers face over them before it cuts to the second Chorus
Verse three will show victim 3 being chased through an abandoned industrial estate which is by the docks. This is a typical horror film moment where you would be saying “no don’t go in there” as halfway through the verse victim 3 will run into an abandoned warehouse. An abandoned area is a typical setting for horror films so we thought this would be a good idea. This will be shot day for night like the rest of the music video to keep the view of it all seem smooth.

The first Chorus will be shot in Shaun’s garage with a TV on top of a wooden box of some sort, it will just have a wall as the background to get the viewer to just concentrate on the TV itself. On the TV will be Shaun’s mouth lip syncing to the chorus, but since he is wearing a mask in the rest of the music video it is just hoping the audience will assume it’s the killer. You will only see his mouth on the screen as to not reveal the killers identity.
The second chorus will kind of be the same, except it will carry n from the second verse where victim 2 is killed. The TV will show the killers fave, then the camera tilting to the side where we will be able to see victim 3 clearly in shot going to run away. This will be followed with the killer lip syncing to teh rest of the chorus
The third Chorus is played twice at the end of the film as the music is playing the song out, on this you will see the deaths of the three victims with shots of the killer walking around, as the chorus plays round the second time it will be an extreme close up of the TV with the killers mouth lip syncing to the chorus. At the end of this as the final part of the music is playing, a shot of the killer walking away will play as the music video ends.

Video in Interactive Media Technologies

Codec’s are used to compress all kinds of file, from video, to game. There are specific Codec’s for each kind of file, and to use them you need the same codec on both ends of the file compression transfer. A codec is needed to compress files to send over the internet, seeing as the average download speed is about 2MB/s and a full length film is around 800MB it would take a long time to download, so codec’s are used to compress these files down to make it easier for download. However to decompress these files you need the same codec on your side of the transfer, for example MPEG-4 is one of the most commonly used codec’s on windows computers, and are preinstalled on things like windows media player so when you download files there are automatically decompressed for you.
If you are downloading a game file however you would need a different kind of codec to work off. WinRar is one of these; it can open and decompress files to full size to be able to transfer onto disk. These are good ways of transferring data as it helps downloading take less time, but is only good if you have the right codec to work with.

Downloading is the transfer of files from one computer to another via the internet. There are many factors which affect download speed and how things need to be downloaded. The speed of downloads is conveyed in its bit rate, this is the number of bits that are conveyed or processed per unit of time. For example if an average sized door was the bit rate and a person was the file to be downloaded the loading speed would be extremely quick. However if you were trying to fit an elephant through this door it would take an extremely long time. The average download speed of a computer is 2megabits per second.
Frame rates are the measure of the rate or frequency at which an image device produces unique consecutive images. The FPS (frames per second) of a video is the speed at which the images in the video are played, in British cinema the FPS of a movie is 25 FPS, and in American cinema it is 24 FPS. FPS can be compressed to about 12-12.5 FPS before you start really noticing a change, the lower the FPS is the more jerky a movie will seem, whereas the higher FPS the smoother the movie will run. Video files compressed for download are usually compressed to 12-12.5 FPS to make the file smaller making it easier to send or be downloaded.
Screen Resolutions convey the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed; this can change the size of the screen to the amount of colour shown on the screen. The size of the screen can depend on the resolution you need for a good image, for example a smaller computer monitor would possibly only need a resolution of 800x600 to show a nice clear image, but a bigger screen may need a resolution of 1440x900 to show a clearer image.
File sizes are measured in; Kilobytes, Megabytes, Gigabytes, Terabytes, Petabytes, Exabytes, Zetabytes, and Yottabytes. 1 KB is the smallest size you can get, and you can fit 1000KB in 1 MB, this trend carries on for the rest of the spectrum; 1000 MB in 1 GB etc. The size of a file will depend on how fast it is downloaded from the internet; a smaller file size will be downloaded faster than a larger one.

Picture ratios are used for video production all over the world. The ratios are used to make sure there is a universal size for, film, TV etc. The old picture ration used to be 4:3 making video and TV extremely box shaped in size, nowadays however the picture ratio is 16:9 giving a more panoramic, widescreen view. The picture ration is only a guideline, because as long as you stick to the ratio it doesn’t matter about the size of it, the screen could be from 16cm x 9cm or even 16 miles x 9 miles, as long as the ratio stays the same the video will stay the same quality.
These videos have to be played on the right media players. If you have a DVD it would need to be played on a DVD player, or you would need to have a DVD drive on your computer. To play these on computers, you can get DVD programs for your computer, such as Power DVD, to give a good quality film. On Apple Macs, the primary media player is QuickTime, this is apples own media player and plays all videos made for Apple Mac, or downloaded onto a Mac computer. For Windows, the media player is Windows media player, which plays all video files from the internet, and also MP3 and WAV files for computers. This means you can listen to music as well as watch videos on this programme. For mobile phones you have Real player, which is a smaller media player and is what Smart phones etc use to play downloaded videos on. This is a lower quality player but works with smaller mobile videos. If you wanted to watch TV or listen to Radio on the internet when you wanted there are site such as BBC Iplayer, which lets you watch TV on demand and listen to radio from any of its various stations, live or Pre-recorded. Media players are good because it means that anyone can download videos and watch them rather than have to trouble with acquiring the correct codec for the job.

Streaming video is what is done on sites like YouTube or Newgrounds, and is majorly user-generated content. This means you can put anything you want on the internet to share with anyone; these videos are only viewable on the internet and don’t involve any downloading.
You can embed certain videos off YouTube onto a blog or any other website you may own. This is useful if you are writing up about these things or just want to show off a good video. Embedding involves taking the specific HTML format and copying it onto a different site to show the video as it is in its own little player. You can choose the sizes of these as well if you wanted a larger video than normal.
Videos can also be tagged with certain keywords associated with the content in the video, making the video searchable on Google, or Bing for example, this can help you get your video onto the web quicker and found by people searching for your keywords. This works on streamed videos as well as downloaded videos so you can choose to get the video either way.

Uses of Video in Interactive Media

Advertising is the biggest most widespread use of interactive media technology. Advertising is everywhere, on TV, on the internet, even through emails. Advertising is the easiest way of promoting a product and one of the cheapest, with advertising you can just show a quick video of what you are selling in action. On TV the adverts are mainly for products that are available in store such as; toys, food, or electronics. These always show the product and someone within the target audience of the product having fun and showing how it should be used, this will make the buyer want to acquire the product. On the internet, the majority of adverts are for downloads, and links to other sites. This can include charity websites or sites for music downloads, the sites that are being advertised will relate to the page you are on. For example if you are on a games website, such as Newgrounds, the adverts will most likely be for other gaming websites, or music/radio sites such as Jango the links will be for music download, or other bands.
There are 2 other types of advertising as well as the norm. The first of these are promotions, and promotional material. These can include things like free downloads or free trials to get you hooked onto the game, or program. Like World of Warcraft, you can download a free 10 day trial, but after this is over you have to pay the full amount if you want to keep on playing, this is a good way of promoting a product as if the person enjoys the trial they will want to keep playing.
The other type of advertising is viral marketing. This is a very sneaky way of advertising a product as most of the time you cant tell if it is meant to be promoting the product or is just a piece of user-generated content. Viral videos are put on sites for user-generated content sites, such as YouTube or Newgrounds. The videos will often only subtly hint at the product or just be a full blown parody of the product, the Bike Hero video on YouTube involves someone following a set track on their bike pressing the buttons to play the track. This was found to be a viral video after it was made by someone collaborating with the production company; these are very good ways of promoting products because they don’t require to be paid for seeing as it is free to upload onto these sites.

Short films are another use of video; these are films that are usually under 10 minutes in length. Short films are cheap ways of promoting the director, in the same way that a music video promotes an artist. Short films usually go straight to the point, consisting of a lot of action with a climax at the end. Film trailers are a kind of short film which is designed to promote a film, these are 3-4 minutes long and are action packed with some of the best parts of a film, but not giving away too much of the story. The film trailer for the film ‘Avatar’ is completely action packed and contains a little bit of drama, it shows you the basics of the film and the storyline, but doesn’t show you the ending as to not spoil it for you. These are good ways to promote the film and directors as, as long as they are good, will want you to know and watch more.

User-generated content sites are a good way to make a name for yourself as an up and coming producer, writer, or games designer. Sites like YouTube are free to use and free to upload videos too so if you wish to let people see videos etc that you have filmed and directed yourself, these are good ways of doing so. If you have a short film that you have filmed, with a low budget, you can put it on social networking sites so other people can view your work and you can get honest feedback.
If you wish to be a web game designer there are sites like Newgrounds which let you create and upload games for feedback from other designers and just members of the general gaming public. Sites like this can be very useful because if you have an idea for a game and you’re not sure how it would be received, you can upload it to these sites and get honest impartial feedback.
Blogs can be used if you have an idea for an article you are working on if you are a journalist of some sort, or even if you just wish to voice your opinions and ideas. Sites such as blog spot and blogger allow you to publish your own ideas so people of the general public can comment and see what is going on. There is also the option to comment on these which can help if it is a piece of work you are unsure about.

Virtual reality tours are primarily used on sites of estate agents and other property selling managements. With these you can go through a virtual tour of the house or property your thinking of buying from the comfort of your own seat. This can be extremely attractive to the buyer as if they live a busy lifestyle they can pick the houses they wish to view more carefully than from just a few select images. Also this is a clever thought by the realtor, as they can make the expensive houses look even better to persuade people to buy, as the buyer will be viewing all aspects of the home.
Another place to use VR tours is in museums. Museums such as the RAF museum have 360 panoramic tours to view some of the exhibits of the museum. This is clever because if people are thinking of going to the museum they can take a look on this site and see some of what they will be viewing. If this is what the viewer is interested in this will only spur them on more to go and visit the museum.
Universities also use VR tours to get prospective students to visit, and possibly apply to the university. This will get more students wanting to visit if the university shows to have good facilities for what they wish to study. They would also show the different dorm rooms in the university buildings, this would work in the same way as the real estate agents, as if the university has good dorm rooms, prospective students will want to go there to have a fairly nice place to stay.

E- Learning is a way to be taught via the internet by yourself. Sites such as the BBC have programs that can be used for self learning, if you wanted to learn about the Dinosaurs there are news articles, and even specific slideshows on the subject. There are also pages on the subject to learn about specific types of dinosaur, if you are looking to do research or just have an interest. There are also educational games that can be accessed on subjects. These let you play through certain scenarios as if you lived in the time or if you were a dinosaur yourself, with facts about what would happen along the way, so as you were playing you were learning as well. There are also other sites such as Sam learning, which is a revision site for GCSE’s and SAT’s. These contain question and answer slideshows to help revise for your chosen subject, it also has educational videos to watch while learning about your subjects. This is a very good way of learning as it is entirely self taught, therefore it shows you wish to learn and are going to concentrate, rather than being sat in front of someone talking to you.

Games are a form of entertainment and are accessible to anyone with internet access on a computer, or who own a games console. These are more popular with the younger audience as they offer a distraction to doing work. There are many kinds of gaming platforms to cater to everybody; there are games for little children all the way up to adults, depending on your preference. For example the game ‘Viva PiƱata: Party Animals’ is a very colourful game and very easy to play, this would appeal to the younger audience as it involves a lot of paper talking animals competing against each other. Whereas the game ‘Borderlands’ is dank but cartoony in appearance with a lot of violence about it, this would appeal more to the teenage-young adult audience as it is a harder game and offers more of a challenge. Games are extremely good as most people like to go for them for a bit of entertainment, and can even be played with multiple people to offer a group playing experience.

Platforms for video in interactive media

The World Wide Web is the Biggest Platform for video in interactive Media. This is a resource available to everyone who can get access to a computer with internet access. These are available at the majority of public libraries if you don’t own one yourself. It contains various amounts of information about anything, if you are looking for research on a certain subject such as a music director, or even if you are just looking for a simple fact about a certain animal. There are a few different internet browsers available for download or which work specifically against a certain operating system, and they have different attributes when it comes to browsing. Firefox for example is the web browser for Linux operating systems, but can be downloaded for use on Microsoft PC’s; this favours a faster browsing speed than Microsoft internet explorer. Firefox is a favourite of mine as since I browse the internet a lot and download certain things like games etc it is preferable to me.

Another platform for video are E-mail attachments, these are files of some sort added onto an E-mail. This makes transferring data from person to person much easier. The files that can be added can be anything from a spreadsheet to an audio or video file. Files can also be sent to yourself via E-mail if you need to take the file to multiple places, this will make it easier.

DVD and CD rom’s are different ways of saving data you need to move other than a memory stick. DVD’s have a higher capacity for storing data than a CD so are primarily used for burning videos too. CD’s, having a smaller data capacity, are used for Music and other Audio files. CD’s are however becoming more redundant with people downloading MP3 files more often.

Kiosks are a newer platform in interactive media. They are interactive stations that can be found in places like bus stations or tourist hot-spots; these can give away a lot of useful information on the area around the Kiosk. For example a Kiosk at a bus station would be more likely to give information on bus timetables, and prices, other than information on the history on the bus stop. However a Kiosk at a tourist destination such as Big Ben in London would have information on the architectural and historical facts of the site.
Another newer form of video in interactive media is the red button click through on your TV. This has made searching for certain things much easier, it gives more variety to what you can watch, if Wimbledon was on the TV you would be able to press the red button and choose which game you wished to watch. This is also the case for news channels, you can choose whether to watch; the headlines, sport, weather etc, which helps if you are searching for news on a certain subject. Another use for the red button is gaming; on certain channels there is the option to press the red button and to be taken to a game relating to the channel. Usually you can carry on watching the programme while playing a game at the same time, although not entirely practical, it is extremely attractive to a younger audience.

Presentations, such as PowerPoint presentations, are mainly for expressing an idea or thought to a group of people who know nothing on the subject. Presentations can consist of entirely one typecast, such as entirely text, or entirely video, however are much more well received when they contain more than one to add variety and to not bore the subject. A PowerPoint presentation on Ancient Egypt for example, could not only contain facts about certain points, but also show still images of temples and pyramids to excite the subject rather than pages and pages of text. This is an extremely good way of getting a point across because it involves very little paperwork and you can also include videos, which can be a stronger way of describing something than just a still image.

Mobile phones and other handheld mobile devices are a platform that would mainly cater to the younger audiences. This is because younger people are more likely to be amazed with the ease and functionality of it, even if, in the case of a blackberry or smart phone, all of the functions aren’t going to be used. Seeing as the majority of people will be attracted to something due to its looks most handheld devices are designed to look smart and sleek, to make the majority of people think that their life cannot work without one. Games consoles are also an example of this, for they keep bringing out newer versions of the same thing with a very slight difference making you want the newer version. These are very successful forms of video in interactive media for anyone can use them from a young child to an upper class businessman, and seeing as nowadays most handheld devices have access to the internet, anything can be accessed from anywhere.
